“Mouthful of Bees” by Perennial

Perennial have shared a video for their new single “Mouthful of Bees,” a track of their New album Art History, the LP is now via Ernest Jenning Record Co. (King Khan) and Safe Suburban Home. The news comes ahead of the band’s forthcoming December 2024 UK headline tour dates. This will be the first time the band have ever toured in the United Kingdom.

Commenting on the single, guitarist Chad Jewett says: “‘Mouthful Of Bees’ has become a live staple for us and a nice, compact showcase of what we do: quick, sharp, and groovy. A minute and a half that lands somewhere between The Blood Brothers and Small Faces.”

An art punk three-piece from New England, Perennial’s sound—built from the sharp minimalism of guitar, electric organ, and drums—is a kinetic collage of mod pop, 90s post-hardcore, post-bop jazz and 60s soul. Art History, was released earlier this year via Ernest Jenning Record Co. (US) and Safe Suburban Home (UK), and is available everywhere that chic modernist punk is sold.

The song follows Previously-released title track, released on a surprise flexi EP called Lemon On Plastic, and singles “Action Painting” and “How The Ivy Crawls” were released earlier this year.

New album Art History finds the New England three-piece—electric organist Chelsey Hahn, guitarist Chad Jewett, and drummer Ceej Dioguardi—mastering their modernist punk as a collage of 60s mod grooves, post-hardcore angles, Stax soul, and experimental electronic music.

Co-produced by the band and engineer Chris Teti (The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die), Art History is the follow-up to the band’s 2022 breakthrough, In The Midnight Hour, and feels like a celebration of all the ways the band has pushed themselves so far.

When Perennial went into the studio to begin work on Art History, their upcoming third LP, one phrase remained at the forefront of their creative minds: “pop art.” Everything should be bold and electric, instantly memorable and insistently chic. They were after something sharp and stylish.

There are two versions of Perennial: the adventurous art-punk modernists, layering British Invasion pop, 60s soul, 90s Dischord post-hardcore, electronic music, and free-jazz, and the live three-piece whose bombastic 20 minute sets have become a “must-see” in the New England music scene.

The band have played over 300 shows played in the last six years (including dates with Guerilla Toss, Bully, Calvin Johnson, Jon Spencer, Sheer Mag, Teenage Halloween, and Downtown Boys) and multiple pressings of both of their full-length records. Perennial formed the band they always wanted to hear, and when they play, they’re the band they always wanted to see.
