Golden Apples, is the project of Philadelphia multi-artist Russell Edling. Today he has shared the song “Mind,” the track, is the second single from their forthcoming album, Shooting Star, available September 19th via Lame-O Records. Edling wrestles with the emotional dissonance of Western life in a time of global upheaval, singing “if this love is an event in my mind, and all this evil is an event in my mind, I must be out of mind.”

Golden Apples will be in New York next month at Bazooka! Fest. Following, they’ll play in Philadelphia with Finom, and then embark on a recently announced West Coast tour with Wicca Phase Springs Eternal. They’ll also appear at Philly Music Fest in October.

In Edling’s words, “Mind” “explores the futility of seeking peace via mindfulness amidst the constant sorrows of the times. Today, it is impossible to exist for a day without being faced with nearly unthinkable evils, and any defenses I had concocted to keep myself feeling sane and safe have been overwhelmed. It just makes me want to totally erase any and all thoughts by whatever means necessary.”

For Shooting Star, Edling sought to deconstruct his creative process by centering collaboration instead of a more solitary pursuit in songwriting. He describes taking time to make notes of the ways, timing and forms in which songs came to him in the process of demoing the record, and regularly questioning if his approach was like that of “watching a pot of water boil” or waiting for a bolt of light to appear in the sky. Instead of holing up in a recording studio, the record was formed by a patchwork of collaborations in a variety of recording locales, all which were later alchemized by mix engineer Matthew Schimelfenig. As a result, Shooting Star is packed to the brim with playful eccentricities and dynamism.
