“Middle of” by Melkbelly
Melkbelly are set to release their debut Nothing Valley, on Oct. 13th via Wax Nine, headed by Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz. “Middle of”, is the latest single. Winters comments on the song’s origins: “Sometimes experiencing new types of nature is so fantastic and foreign that you’re left feeling lost. It’s the type of alienation you feel in your gut. ‘Middle Of’ is about digesting the anxiety of newness till you can feel the terrain on your skin and it swallows you up. Inanimate/animate, him/her–you’re just a speck in a universe.”
Upon release of Melkbelly’s debut Pennsylvania EP in 2014. Their debut full-length was recorded fresh off a West Coast tour in which the band let the hours on the road and missed art tourism opportunities at Spiral Jetty shape the songs and recording process as they wrote half the album material in the studio. The result is organized noise and thoughtful freneticism, a fusion of dreamy vocal lines and cantankerous guitar racket. Its songs clang and bang in stripped-down production that highlights the band’s sharp edges; multi-faceted slabs of sound serve harmonious, immediate songs.
