Mexican Summer Announce Five Year Celebration
This fall marks the five-year anniversary of Mexican Summer, the independent record label operating out of Greenpoint, Brooklyn alongside its extended family Software Recording Co., Gary’s Electric recording studio and the CO-OP 87 record store. This occasion will be celebrated with a two-day festival, followed by the publication of a limited edition deluxe book.
Over the past five years, Mexican Summer has expanded its catalog well beyond 100 releases while maintaining the hands-on sensibility of a boutique record label. Releases by artists such as Best Coast, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Washed Out, Kurt Vile, Peaking Lights, Oneohtrix Point Never and reissues of little known legends such as Robert Lester Folsom, Linda Perhacs, and Fraction have created a loyal Mexican Summer following.
The five-year anniversary is commemorated by Mexican Summer: Five Years, a 250-page, 11×11” book limited to 1,000 copies. The book features unique and unseen art and ephemera, photos and written contributions from a host of Mexican Summer artists. Designed by longtime collaborator Dan Schechter, Mexican Summer: Five Years features an embossed cloth cover, screen-printed craft paper wrap, and three interior paper stocks.
Accompanying the book is a 10″ record of exclusive collaborations from Bay Of Pigs (Spiritualized, Soldiers of Fortune and Neil Hagerty), Jorge Elbrose (Jorge Elbrecht and Ariel Pink), Autre Ne Veut and Fennesz, Bobb Trimble and Quilt and The Lonely Sailor and Renée Mendoza Haran (members of Total Control, Lace Curtain and Ashrae Fax.) This music is exclusive to the book and will not be available digitally.
The Mexican Summer Five-Year Festival takes place on Friday, October 11th and Saturday, October 12th at the Pioneer Works Center for Art and Innovation in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The venue will provide indoor and outdoor space to feature live performances and DJ sets by Mexican Summer artists and friends, in what will be a joyous celebration of five years and many more to come.
Transportation is available via Rockabus to and from the venue, with two departure points in Downtown Brooklyn and Williamsburg. Prime Meats, Frankies Spuntino 457 and Brooklyn Brewery will be providing food and drinks for the festivities. And finally, there will be a CO-OP 87-run pop-up shop of collectible used vinyl and Mexican Summer releases.
