Lush Premieres ‘A Far From Home Movie’
Lush have captured some of their earliest and fondest memories. The Criterion Channel premiere of a hidden-gem in their history: A Far From Home Movie, a short film created by bassist Phil King. Shared now in memory of Chris Acland, the film compiles candid super8 footage taken by King during Lush’s time touring from 1992-1996.
As King wrote: “By the time I joined Lush at the end of 1991, they had already played around 190 shows in their four year career – and would go onto play another 320 or so before drummer Chris Acland’s tragic and untimely death in October 1996. I would often take my trusty Sankyo Super 8 camera on tour with me – and since film was costly would try and make sure to shoot footage sparingly. Hopefully this film captures the excitement (and boredom) of being on tour – and, sadly in retrospect, I hope that it serves as a fitting memorial to a much missed by us all Chris.”
The film’s release via The Criterion Channel is also accompanied by two exclusive limited-edition risograph printed A3 posters. The posters are available to pre-order for the next week only on the 4AD webstore and Lush Bandcamp.
Built around the songwriting talents of Emma Anderson and Miki Berenyi, Lush defined a myriad of 90s scenes such as shoegaze, dream pop and Britpop before they disbanded in 1998. A much-loved band who briefly reformed in 2016, recent years has seen a new, young audience fall in love with their music
Last year marked the return of Lush’s studio albums to print, with all three records released on vinyl — outside of a Record Store Day career retrospective boxset in 2016, all three studio albums – Spooky (1992), Split (1994), and Lovelife (1996) – had been unavailable on vinyl since the 90s, until now. With demand high, the band enlisted renowned engineer/producer Kevin Vanbergen to help them remaster their catalogue, starting with their studio albums (with utilization of the original ½” production tapes for source material, transformed into brand new 24-bit masters that capture the moments of the originals).
