Luna Shadows Debuts “Little Rituals”
Singer/songwriter Luna Shadows, has shared new single/video “little rituals.” The track wrestles with romanticizing the past, torn between passion and peace, Luna battles with her own desires as she croons, “ooh take my pain away / wait, give it all back / I want it all back.” The second offering from Luna’s forthcoming full-length.
“little rituals” follows Luna’s single “witches’ brew.” The song was written in the midst of Luna’s struggle to create while battling depression and anxiety, delving deep into an ocean of darkness and uncertainty before soaring up to the surface to break through into a ray of hope and light. The juxtaposition between Luna’s serene whisper and cuttingly specific lyricism is sharp. “witches’ brew” bravely explores the way women are ostracized and punished by society for failure to conform, and Luna does not shy away from this pain as she sings, “back in the day / they would have made an incision / cut out my brain /wouldn’t have been my decision / earlier on / would have been one of those women / burnt at the stake / not a chance for forgiveness.”
Luna shares about the song:
“‘little rituals’ is about experiencing all of your emotions in high-definition – the good and the bad. It’s a song about understanding that to feel the highs, you have to accept the lows. I read some Sylvia Plath and hopped on Zoom with my collaborator Bradley Hale (Now, Now) to write a long lost 70s style summer song about what it means to find joy again, after sadness and stillness.
It also features my first guitar solo – the first of several on my upcoming record. My primary instrument is piano and for years I’ve been fairly content as a rhythm guitarist floating in the background – but I decided to step into the limelight for this LP, and to focus on joy instead of virtuosity.”
She adds about the accompanying music video:
“If ‘witches’ brew’ is about the burden of magic and creativity, then ‘little rituals’ picks up at the point where it all starts to amount to something deeply fulfilling, fun, mischievous, and ultimately meaningful. Like the song, the video is about re-discovering joy, levity, purpose, and a sense of belonging. Directed by me, and shot on 16mm film in the mountains of Topanga, CA.”
