Lowertown Tourist Trap

Lowertown have released a new video for “Tourist Trap,” the track is off their forthcoming release Honeycomb, Bedbug, which drops December 11, via on Dirty Hit (Pale Waves, Beabadoobee). Earlier this month, the band released their first single since signing with Dirty Hit, “Best Person You Know.”

Lowertown’s Olivia Osby and Avsha Weinberg first met in math class in high school after discovering their shared love for DIY music, and now they create, record, produce and master all of their tracks from their basement studio. Their music mixes lush instrumentation, samples, synthesizers and homemade ambiance paired with moody vocals and lyrics. They released their debut single “George” in 2018 (recorded when the pair were just 16 years old), and subsequent debut LP Friends in 2019. 2020, saw Osby and Weinberg graduate from high school, complete another EP and sign with Dirty Hit. The duo’s sound is Influenced by Aphex Twin, Modest Mouse, Radiohead, (Sandy) Alex G, and Animal Collective.

Olivia Osby on “Tourist Trap:”

“”Tourist Trap” was a song written during my senior year of High School. At this point in my life, the only thing that existed was an uncomfortable repetitive cycle of going from home to school over and over. I felt like I lived in this box where I would do homework, watch TV, write college applications, listen to and write music, then sleep, and then I’d wake up and travel to another box where I would sit for eight hours a day taking notes, being quiet, dozing off, or counting down the seconds until I got to move to the next period of class which felt the exact same as the last. I think a lot of us get trapped in a “box” whether it’s the thought loops we get locked into or our daily routine. We can sometimes cage ourselves into this repetitive, mind-numbing cycle that starts to feel like the only possible way of doing things. You kick into this form of autopilot where everything feels deadened, or less exciting and time seems to slip away without you even paying attention to it. It can be a hollowing experience being in the box for too long. Like you’re doing all the things you’re supposed to do to get by and you can keep up outward appearances fine enough but you’re just a husk of your complete self and you’re not experiencing life to the fullest extent it can be experienced. You can’t remember a time before living in this ‘box’ and you can’t imagine life outside of it because the unknown is terrifying.”

Explaining how the song’s recording roots took shape, she added: “‘Tourist Trap’ was our first song written for the project, and we felt like it was a really good introduction into the phase of our lives that this project reflects. We wanted the song to feel like the listener was in the room with us when we wrote it. We left every little sound in of us tapping on the tables and water rushing in the pipes in the studio because we felt like we needed the instrumentals to be as raw and emotional as the lyrics were. All the instrumentals came in a sudden burst, and we wanted to keep that unfiltered feeling, so the tracks that Avsha recorded with a broken tambourine and a toy drum machine and percussion made by kicking the floor are all still in the song.”
