Lowell announces new EP, premieres video
On her 2014 debut album, We Loved Her Dearly, Toronto’s Lowell arrived as a confident young singer-songwriter on a wave of punchy-pop inspiration. Equal parts art-punk brat and sex-positive icon, Lowell’s music confronted LGBTQ issues and women’s rights with unbridled courage and the exultance of dance-floor dream-pop.
Following her collaborative single “Ride” with Icona Pop, the young pop enchantress has now announced new music, Part 1: PARIS YK – an EP produced by Grammy and Juno Award-nominated Zale Epstein (Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q) and mixed by Davey Badiuk (Dragonette, Tegan and Sara).
Co-created by Lowell and director Sylvain Chaussée, the video for “High Enough” blends black-and-white film grain with dashes of colour. Chaussée, a Toronto-based filmmaker and photographer, described the video “High Enough” as “a cinematic study of Lowell as a performer through the use of movement and extensive colour printing techniques.”
This new three-song EP collection, a peek into the future work from one of Canada’s most exciting pop talents, reflects back on a formative period of Lowell’s life. Intuiting northern lights and tundra with synonymous sound, Lowell blends music and image, personifying the stark Canadian North in contrast with the vibrant life of a musician. The product of a winning battle with writer’s block, Lowell’s lyrics consider the struggle to exceed expectations as an artist, including her own ambitions: “Am I good enough / Am I high enough / Yet?”
Where We Loved Her Dearly’s “Cloud 69” spilled over with energy, the granular electronics, liquid rhythm, and infinite echo of “High Enough” is set in perfect harmony. The Part 1: PARIS YK EP highlights Lowell’s patent sonic detail, blending cinematic atmosphere with an undeniable beat. “High Enough” shows Lowell settling into her own element and the sky is not even close to the limit.
