Lee Fields & The Expressions just released the first video from new album Emma Jean (Truth & Soul) for “Magnolia,” the soulful cover of JJ Cale’s classic. The clip was filmed on a frigid afternoon in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and Plainfield, NJ, the soul legend’s hometown for the last few decades. Directed by Leon Michels–Truth & Soul label co-owner, The Expressions/El Michels Affair/Menahan Street Band saxophonist, and Emma Jean’s producer—the video is Fields’ most intimate to-date, something that could only be achieved between two longtime collaborators and friends like Fields and Michels. Notes Michaels, “’Magnolia’ is a beautiful song with mostly uplifting lyrics about the singer’s lover, but there is also a strong air of longing and sadness to the music. We wanted to create the same feeling for the video that the song has.“ The “Magnolia” video premiered today and can be seen above.

Fields has also announced a new set of west coast tour dates this summer, in addition to his record release show in Brooklyn on May 29. Look for headline shows in Los Angeles, San Diego and Seattle, among others. Full tour routing and ticket links can be found here:
