Mayzie and Australian indie band Oceans, recently dropped “Laura”, a song about the changing nature of female friendships. The track arrives ahead of shows in New Zealand and Australia, they will also play dates in North America, including a stop at the New Colossus Festival in New York City.

Reflecting on the communities we build, and the connections that withstand tough weather, in Laura, Mayzie muses on the maturation of friendship. The shoegaze-inspired track is inspired by the Sundays, Hatchie and the Cranberries; Mayzie sings with deep feeling as the dreamy arrangement surrounds her with warmth. Laura was written and performed by Mayzie Wallen, and recorded and produced by Lindsay Gravina (Jet, the Living End, Magic Dirt, Roland S Howard), Laura reminds the listener to reach out to your loved ones if you haven’t lately, and to hold on to the good one. Even deserts need a little water from time to time.

Speaking on the inspiration behind the song,

Mayzie says “I wrote Laura about a good friend I don’t see as much as I should. I was in the wake of a long-term relationship breakdown. I didn’t really know what to do with myself, I felt so lost. Laura gently picked me up. She put a band-aid on. She checked the band-aid, made sure it was still sticky. I’m so grateful for her, and for all my Lauras”

Mayzie is the solo project of multi-disciplinary artist Mayzie Wallen. With a sound influenced by the likes of Hatchie, Cocteau Twins, Roy Montgomery, The Sundays and Flying Nun Records, Mayzie strikes a balance between dreamy indie pop and shoegaze rock. Mayzie released her first EP “Bright and Tiny Sparks,” in 2023.

Oceans is a shoegaze project in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia. Initially the project of Thomas Lee, the group took new form in 2021 following the marriage of Lee and Wallen. With inspirations varying from Joy Division and Slowdive to Boards of Canada and Tycho, the heart of Oceans’ sound is a dedication to experimentation and timbre, creating vast sonic landscapes inspired by ambient, new wave and 90’s shoegaze coupled with Wallen’s fiercely unique vocal style. Across Oceans’ breakthrough EP’s Come So Far, and debut album Dreamers in Dark Cities.
