King Pari wrote “Somethin’ Somethin” in 2020 during the pandemic and civil rights protests. “It was a time when we, along with everyone else, were trying to make sense of the massive, deeply disruptive changes to our world that didn’t make sense, as well as all the anger, pain, and confusion that was felt across the world.” The song captures the feeling “of grasping for understanding when understanding is impossible.” King Pari will be supporting fellow Stones Throw artist Ginger Root in the UK & Europe this fall.

“Somethin’ Somethin:” is the last song to be released ahead of the band’s debut album, There It Goes, out next month. There It Goes pairs freewheeling fun with careful reflection – a record for anyone who has felt confused, curious, heartbroken, sunny, or lost. Listening to it feels like that moment after a rough patch when things are finally starting to go your way, because that’s the spirit in which it was made. King Pari’s forthcoming album There It Goes, will drop on October 18th via, Los Angeles taste maker Stones Throw Records, with vinyl to follow.

Though they live in LA, King Pari is the result of a happy accident that occurred back in Minneapolis. Joe Paris Christensen and Cameron Kinghorn had been playing in the same Twin Cities scenes for years, but when Joe sent Cameron a new tune he’d whipped up on a tape machine, something clicked. That session grew into the first King Pari song.

The band’s Minneapolis funk pedigree anchors their music. Both Joe and Cameron played alongside some of Prince’s closest associates, and Joe’s previous band was among the last that Prince personally invited to play at Paisley Park. They’ve been tapped into national funk and jazz scenes from the beginning – before they’d even landed on a name, King Pari’s first gig was opening for Kamasi Washington.
