Kate Bollinger Live Review: November 16 at Fortune Sound Club, Vancouver BC
On Saturday night, Kate Bollinger performed to a full house at Fortune Sound Club in Vancouver’s Chinatown. Her five-piece band delivered a captivating, nearly 90-minute set drawn from various corners of the young singer-songwriter’s discography. The crowd was treated to a sonic experience that was
lounge-y, fuzzy, occasionally rocking, and consistently sweet.
Bollinger exuded a humble energy throughout the evening. She strolled onto the stage, picked up her guitar, and plugged in without ceremony, giving no indication that her entrance was meant to be a grand reveal. This understated approach stood in fascinating contrast to her growing critical acclaim, particularly in a year that has seen her artistry celebrated widely. While the tour marks the release of her debut full-length album, Bollinger is far from an amateur in performance. Her vocal delivery was impeccable—assured yet intimate, marked by impressive control that never compromised its vulnerability.
Songs like “Sweet Devil” from her debut album made you wonder if Bollinger could replicate her sweet croon and mature vibrato live—and she delivered. Not only did the singer herself bring her all in the dignified and outright impressive vocals, but the live track demonstrated a moment of total band connection that packed a dynamic punch into that 450 capacity room; filling the space with palpable energy and warmth.
The atmosphere in the venue was as receptive as Bollinger’s mellow, sincere presence. Her bubbly personality came through effortlessly in her banter with the audience—funny, natural, and never overdone. The crowd, seeming to be predominantly late 20s and early 30s, mingled with a mix of long-time fans and casual live music enthusiasts, creating an essence that felt reminiscent of a house show. Throughout the night, whispers and laughter floated through the room, blending naturally with Bollinger’s melodies. People swayed in small groups, shared moments of joy, and engaged deeply during the set’s more poignant moments. It was a fluid demonstration of how live music can meet us in different ways—both as a backdrop for connection and as an immersive performance.
In many ways, Bollinger feels poised on the brink of a pivotal breakthrough. Her eloquent delivery and attentive stage presence hint at an artist coming into her own, and the Fortune Sound Club audience was lucky to witness her at this stage in her career. With her undeniable talent and fresh, fiery artistry, Kate Bollinger offered a breath of fresh air that left us eager for what’s to come.
