Jeff Tweedy Covers Bill Fay
Jeff Tweedy has shared his version of Bill Fay’s “Filled With Wonder Once Again”; the next instalment in a special series of singles featuring different musicians celebrating and interpreting Fay’s work. Marking Fay’s recent 80th birthday, it follows covers in the series so far by Steve Gunn, Kevin Morby, Julia Jacklin, Mary Lattimore and Hiss Golden Messenger.
Tweedy remains a longtime vocal fan and speaking in a 2020 New York Times profile on Fay, remarked that his music “sounds like it was designed in a laboratory for me to fall in love with.” The pair also dueted in 2007 when Fay joined Tweedy on stage in London during a Wilco show for a rendition of ‘Be Not So Fearful’ (Fay’s first live appearance in over 30 years).
‘Filled With Wonder Once Again’ is a track taken from Fay’s 2020 album Countless Branches, which the Sunday Times wrote ‘…might be his masterpiece’. It features compositions drawn from the trove of material Fay had amassed over 40 years and found Fay at his most hopeful – retaining the awestruck, inquisitive feel of his early songs.
Dead Oceans recently released the reissue of Fay’s Still Some Light; a double compilation record featuring 70s album demos and 2009 home recordings. Out in two parts, Still Some Light: Part 1 was released in Jan 2022, comprising the 70s album demos. The second part, consisting of the 2009 home recordings, Still Some Light: Part 2, followed in May 2022.
