“Jeff Tweedy” By Spurts

Spurts released “Jeff Tweedy,” the track is off the Oakland, CA band’s forthcoming album That Was Mean And I’m Sorry, due out on May 3rd via Lava Socks Records. The song is their statement “on the callousness and unpredictable climate of the music industry”.

“Jeff Tweedy” offers a short and slightly petty viewpoint on the hardships of achieving success as a musician. Targeted at Wilco guitarist / vocalist Jeff Tweedy, the track acts as a sarcastic (yet loving) response to the proposed effortlessness of songwriting Tweedy preaches. Containing equal parts vocals as it does instrumentals, Spurts quickly say their piece as the remainder of the track unfolds into a spaciously hazy (and very 90’s tinged) guitar solo.

When speaking about the inspiration behind “Jeff Tweedy”, Robert Sanlis of Spurts writes:

“The song was directly inspired by reading Jeff Tweedy’s book “How to Write One Song.” In this book, Jeff Tweedy takes a kind of “tough love” approach where, at least in my reading of it, he tells the reader to stop making excuses and get off their ass, and just write a song. At the time, I was like, ‘Easy for you to say, Jeff Tweedy! You’re a famous rock star who can sit around all day making songs in your downtown Chicago studio! I’m a public school teacher who can’t find the energy to clean my own car! How am I supposed to make an album?!’ I guess I wrote it out of bitterness and jealousy. That being said, I love him!”

Spurts includes Robert Sanlis (guitar / vocals), Nathan Graves (keys), Chris Schubert (bass) and Jack Kovacich (drums).
