“I’m Not Alone” By Sophia Stel
Sophia Stel shares new single “Im Not Alone.” The track is off the artist’s debut EP, Object Permanence, available September 13 via Pack. Records. Stel says, “I thought for a long time about making this song before I actually got started. It’s got a lot of lyrics, and in many ways is more of a poem so I wanted the instrumentation to be simple but dreamy. I wanted it to really wrap itself around the words, while still leaving the emotion room to surface.” Stel recently played a show with EKKSTACY and Loukeman in Vancouver, she will play an EP release shows at Vancovuer’s Paradise on September 13th.
As long as she can remember, music has been a part of Stel’s life, despite the odds. Growing up in an intensely religious household with a total of ten siblings, seven of which were adopted, her music navigates the realities of life lived in the throes of addiction and the pain of growing up queer in an environment with no room for acceptance.
After turning eighteen Stel moved out from her family home, and bounced around from place to place before finally moving into a skate house, spending her time making beats in the basement studio and skating in her free time. Despite the frequently hard-partying environment around her, this formative time is when “I started to make my chosen family,” and the first strains of stability that led to relationships (including her current best friend and girlfriend) that felt like they could last. It was also when she started to take music more seriously, and birthed early versions of some of the songs that make up Object Permanence. Stel’s songs have always felt tactile, shaped in the moment, and often come to her in blips of tangible feeling without any specific method of writing lyrics or instrumentals first.”They also feel like sharply observative revelations of the mundane, thoughts jotted down as they come to her, from “cigarettes and gatorade” (Im Not Alone”) to people’s attempts at connection at the bar she works at.”
