Happy Fangs Announce Debut LP ‘Capricorn’
San Francisco based trio Happy Fangs are set to kick off 2015 with the release of their debut LP, Capricorn, on January 27th. Lance Jackman produced and engineered the nine-track album at Sacramento’s The Dock Studio, where Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, and Wild Flag have all recorded. The album takes three front-people from drastically different musical backgrounds and creates a unique sonic force made by three Capricorns. In their own words.
“We made this album by continuously saying: Put more of yourself into your music. Make the music only you can make. We did that by bringing everything we knew to the table—our ready instruments, our raw stories, our strong opinions, our vulnerabilities. We did not hesitate to let everything crash together.”
Capricorn is the follow up to Happy Fangs’ self-titled EP. In 2007, Rebecca Bortman (Vocals) and Michael Cobra (Guitar, Drum Machine) first met at a shared practice space in the Tenderloin district. At the time, Cobra was shredding his way through the scene playing guitar in King Loses Crown, while Bortman was gaining vocal prowess fronting My First Earthquake. When Bortman left My First Earthquake in 2012, she began working on new material with Cobra. The pair quickly found their sound, which lead to Happy Fangs EP, (October 2013) including the single “Lion Inside You.”
Wanting to fill in their sound, Happy Fangs decided to expand their rhythm section beyond a drum machine. They set out find their dream drummer – “A woman who hits harder than anyone else.” Jess Gowrie (Drums) of I’m Dirty Too and Red Host (A band she formed with Chelsea Wolfe), answered the call and became the third official member of Happy Fangs. The trio spent 2014 working on new material and touring across North America. Tour stops included a hometown performance at Noise Pop, NXNE in Toronto, Empty Bottle in Chicago, Pianos in NYC and an additional 3 shows at this year’s CMJ.
This holiday season Happy Fangs are thrilled to announce the next chapter with their debut album Capricorn. They’ll celebrate the record with a hometown show on January 31st at the Rickshaw Stop.
