Headache

Girl Scout

Girl Scout’s newest EP Headache is an exciting project with vulnerable and observational lyricism. With Emma Jansson on lead vocals, the band also features Per Lindberg on drums, Viktor Spasov on guitar and Evelina Eklind on bass.

Starting off with the track ‘Desert Island Movies’, the storytelling aspect of these songs are shown straight away. The chorus explodes, and with the context of pretentious and superficial people at a party, the song quickly becomes much more relatable.

‘Honey’ trades the punky choruses from the previous song for an overall calmer tone, with Emma’s vocals helping to create that atmosphere, alongside the overdriven guitar that thunders throughout. ‘Headache’ signals the midway mark of the project while treating the listener to their most vulnerable song on the EP. It allows the flow to slow down and not overwhelm the listener. It’s an extremely raw few moments, all of which are emphasised by the stripped-back nature of mainly the guitar and vocals that move the focus onto the writing.

The tone quickly returns to that of angst and catharsis with ‘I Just Needed You To Know’, picking up pace. It has the catchiest moment of the entire project with the repeated pre-chorus, building tension with each repetition before the emotional release of the chorus.

I’m So Sorry’ closes the EP, with Emma singing about personal insecurities and feelings of not being enough. It’s another showcase of her raw writing, feeling personal and honest while keeping within the theme and tone of the overall project.

With choruses that explode with drums and heavy guitars, and bass guitar lines that power songs through from the start, Headache is an electrifying release from Girl Scout. For a release of an EP this early into their career to be so promising and detailed, it’s clear that Girl Scout are one to keep an eye on. They’ve managed to bottle the adrenaline and energy of a live performance into these records, with both the song-writing and the lyricism showing a lot of development and maturity as they delve into heavy themes whilst backed by fuzzy guitars or melodic riffs.

Headache is an EP that is both personal and observational, juggling the two with angsty and emotional instrumentation that allows the listener to easily relate to the vivid settings painted for them.
