As Gabby’s World, Gabby Smith crafts muted, tender avant-pop. Their new single, “Open The Door,” showcases the most dynamic side of their formula. It’s inspired by an interplay between personas, and possesses a fittingly restless energy. The single hits the ground running, Smith’s vocals emerging atop a gentle, yet driving drum machine. But the arrangement seems in constant motion, incorporating elements from an unpredictable range of styles, like folky rock and Arthur Russell-y dance. “I wait for / You to / Open the door,” they sing on the chorus, patiently speaking to their creative side. “Open The Door” is taken from Smith’s upcoming album, Gabby Sword, out December 1st on Carrot All Records.

On the track, Smith offers: “When one releases their art into the world, there is a sudden split in their persona that occurs between public and private. “Open the Door” explores the delicate interplay between the two personas, trying to assess who they are and when and where it is appropriate for each to appear. In this song, each self asks for access to the other, but discovers self-protective obstacles between them. They rubberband apart and together, trying to figure out the best tension that comfortably holds both up at once.”
