Brooklyn-based musician and multi-media artist Frances Chang announces her new album, been thinking bout confession, out August 21st via RVNG Intl. and presents the lead single/video, “Is affect real?” been thinking bout confession is a synth-tinged experimental pop excavation of the self and the vast unknown depths it contains. Largely written on a hundred-year-old baby grand piano, the album situates the unbridled emotion of Chang’s DIY roots within a complex and poetic sonic landscape that interweaves orchestral arrangements with idiosyncratic, almost sculptural, electronic and analog interventions.

Following singles “I can feel the waves” and “No avatar,” today’s single “Is affect real?” examines what it means to live in America without being cast as its main character. The song showcases Chang’s ability to conjure a unique interplay of digital and analog sonic realms, all without losing sight of the playful undercurrent coursing throughout.”Is affect real?” comes accompanied by a video co-directed by Chang and Joohee Park.

been thinking bout confession was recorded between Chang’s home in Sunset Park, Brooklyn and the Maspeth, Queens studio of collaborator and album co-producer Andréa Schiavelli (Eyes of Love) who also contributed electric bass and some additional piano playing. Though the album is sonically indebted to the extraterrestrial beauty of Bjork and the retrofuturistic dreaminess of Broadcast, Chang also cites less likely influences like Chet Baker, Dionne Warwick and Burt Bacharach in forming the emotional backbone of the album. Throughout been thinking bout confession, alien vocals can turn crystal-clear and piercing in an instant, just as irreverent electronic arrangements can erupt amidst what began as a straightforward piano ballad.

Following a tour supporting Cate Le Bon across North America earlier this year, Chang will play shows with Bill Callahan this August. A full list of dates are below.
