Fancy Gap includes singer/songwriter Stuart McLamb (The Love Language) and songwriter/producer Charles Crossingham. Today, the duo shared their new single “40,000 Miles.” The song is out now alongside a pastoral video shot in the backwoods of the band’s namesake, Fancy Gap, VA. “Every album has THAT song–the one that presents the most challenges in writing, arranging, recording, mixing, etc. Yet, these songs often become the ones everyone loves the most. This was definitely that song,” explains McLamb and Crossingham. “The challenges didn’t end with the music. We had grand plans for a concept-heavy video but scheduling conflicts left us weeks away from the release with nothing to show. In a last-minute scramble, we decided to drive around Fancy Gap at golden hour, hoping to capture something we could use for a simple lyric video. When we finally dropped the footage into the video editor and paired it with the music, it was like magic. Everything lined up perfectly without any editing. The simplicity of this video speaks volumes and perfectly encapsulates the song’s message. It reminds us that after all the searching, the long hours, and the endless striving, the most important things in life are often right in front of us. It’s about being present, appreciating the beauty around us, and finding joy in the journey itself.”

“40,000 Miles” follows singles: “Little Heart Racer,” wistfully breezy “Strawberry Moon” (featuring vocals by Sharon Van Etten), and classic pop/alt-country amalgam “How To Dance.” Mixed by Grammy-award-winning engineer Craig Alvin (Kacey Musgraves’ ‘Album of the Year’ Golden Hour), Fancy Gap–which features additional contributions from Taking Back Sunday’s Adam Lazzara (vocals on “Filthy Habits”), Will McFarlane (Bonnie Raitt, The Mountain Goats, Etta James), Rami Jaffee (The Foo Fighters, The Wallflowers), and Jon Graboff (Willie Nelson, Noel Gallagher, M. Ward, Norah Jones)–is out this Friday, July 26th and is available for pre-order. The band will celebrate the album at a release show on July 27th at Chapel Hill, NC’s Local 506.

As he began working on a fifth album for The Love Language in early 2020, McLamb took some early demos to Crossingham, whom he had known for nearly a decade but became closer with after moving back to Raleigh, North Carolina, that March. The pandemic struck in the midst of feeling out those early ideas; the two sheltered in Crossingham’s mountain cabin in Fancy Gap, Virginia, and questions of what life would look like when the world started over seeped into their late-night songwriting sessions. What began as a producer/artist collaboration blossomed into a close-knit co-writing project, rooted in Crossingham’s inspired belief and admiration in McLamb’s talents, and the musical kinship that the two had forged. Fancy Gap was born.
