“Damned” by The Holy Knives

The Holy Knives, release their new EP, I Don’t Wanna Win. The four-song collection was produced by Jamie Hince of The Kills, and features the singles, “Damned” and “Killer.” With the digital release comes the announcement of a limited vinyl edition, due January 24 available via the band’s website, along with exclusive availability at the duo’s just announced Los Angeles release celebration, January 23 at Gold-Diggers.

Born and raised in New Orleans, now living in Los Angeles, with some time in Texas, The Holy Knives create music that provides a portal into their world. It’s a place that from the moment you press play, you actually go to. It’s a place that didn’t exist before and won’t exist after, somewhere you can feel what you truly feel, the powerful depth of the world, the weight of the sky, the unbearable beauty of the silence of being you.

“We want to make something striking and cathartic that takes your head off and makes you think, what the hell is this? Something that’s transportative, and carries you to another plane of reality. The best things in art are the ones that change your being from the moment you experience them, and you can never look back,” states Kyle.

Under the guidance of Hince, the brothers Valentine worked to string together the sounds of each piece of their journey, weaving in a bit of the dark swagger of New Orleans, with a few nods to desert psychedelia and the chopped and screwed of Texas, to create their most definitive work to date: music that is rock and roll at its core with a modern touch, bolstered by the expansive inspirations of the band such as western film scores, both hip hop and 90’s trip hop, and the idea of Vegas crooners.

Discussing the record’s title, Kody states, “’I Don’t Wanna Win’ represents a response to a feeling that the world around us, and human nature itself by extension, forces us sometimes to act in combative and self-serving ways even when we don’t want to. It’s about a desire to remove ourselves from the constant cycle of winners and losers, the constant pressure to vie for our own space or be run over or left behind. Ultimately, it’s a simple phrase that represents the ecstasy of accepting yourself for who you are without the need to measure-up against outward markers.”
