The Bug Announces North American Tour
With the release of his latest album on the horizon, London producer The Bug, aka Kevin Martin, is now ready to announce his North American tour. The tour finds The Bug playing New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and more. Along the way The Bug will perform alongside Wolf Eyes and labelmate Actress, and will be joined throughout the tour by longtime Roll Deep collaborators Manga and Flowdan. Full tour dates below.
The tour will follow the release of Angels & Devils, The Bug’s first record in six years and follow-up to 2008’s London Zoo. Set for release on August 26th via Ninja Tune, the record explores the duality between of light and dark, good and evil, and life and death. Joining Kevin on the record are a host of collaborators, including Death Grips, Liz Harris (of Grouper), Gonjasufi, Justin Broadrick (Godflesh/Jesu), copeland (Hype Williams), Flowdan, Miss Red, Manga, and Warrior Queen.
In 2008, Kevin Martin unleashed the psychological sonic warfare that was London Zoo on the world. A record that at the time perfectly encapsulated the state of decay of London and one that arguably marked the end of the first wave of dubstep (in so much as London Zoo was never really easily categorized). One last assault before the sine-wave sweeps of America’s version pushed its bastardization into mainstream popularity. It was on London Zoo, that Kevin completely found the voice he’d been working to project for years, from his debut as The Bug “Pressure”, Razor X productions, Techno Animal, his Pathological Records imprint, writing for The Wire, curating comps of fringe jazz, dub, and electronics for Virgin Records.
Having found that voice and put a time(less)-stamp on London, the time has come for the now Berlin-based Bug to follow up that statement to the world with his forthcoming full length Angels & Devils. Having laid waste to earthly domains, where next but to tackle above and below. Like the Bowie/Enoclassic Low before it, Angels & Devils will be split into two distinct themes under a single banner. But far from a concept album, Angels & Devils really serves to continue his mission to pull together the fringes of all outsider music into a common voice.
As part of the album presentation, two tracks which simultaneously present the duality and contradiction that Angels & Devils explores are packaged together here. Kicking off with the Liz Harris (of Grouper) voiced Void the tone is set for the heady/heavy dubbed out Angels side of the equation, while the flip-side assault of Function (with Roll Deep’s Manga) brings The Bug’s grime/ragga bass beat downs back into play as a Devil focus. Both tracks can currently be streamed.
Featuring Liz Harris (of Grouper), copeland, Miss Red, Gonjasufi, Flowdan, Manga, Death Grips, and Warrior Queen, Angels & Devils is a battle between utopian and dystopian. Exploring the fringes and the negative space between the two. Both a year zero and a continuation/expanding of what has been touched on before.
