BasilicaSoundScape Announce Lineup Additions
For the third year in a row, Basilica Hudsons Creative Directors Melissa Auf Der Maur and Tony Stone are working in collaboration with Brandon Stosuy and Brian De Ran of Leg Up to program BasilicaSoundScape, a carefully curated two-day program onSeptember 12th and 13th featuring a wide range of music, visual art, and literature that aims for specific connections and overlaps instead of “festival”-style overload. Today we are proud to announce the next round of lineup additions at Basilica Hudson, a historic reclaimed 1880s factory on the Hudson waterfront.
On Friday, Leg Up presents legendary New York psych band Endless Boogie, a performance from Gamelan Dharma Swara orchestra, Tim Hecker, Julia Holter, and a headlining set from Richard Reed Parry (of Arcade Fire), who will perform material from his upcoming solo album, Music for Heart and Breath (Deutsche Grammophon).
Saturday’s Show No Mercy-presented lineup features the previously announced Swans and Deafheaven (in both bands’ only area appearances,) and is rounded out by Vancouver-based punk group White Lung (as well as a reading by White Lung frontwoman Mish Way), a reading by Perfect Pussyfrontwoman Meredith Graves, a set by Guardian Alien with additional solo sets by their drummer Greg Fox (also of Liturgy, Ben Frost, Dan Deacon, Zs,) and a set by nomadic dream-pop artist Emily Reo.
Additionally, acclaimed visual artist Sterling Ruby will create large-scale quilt-like flags as backdrops for the main stage. Rubys flags are sewn together from black and blue bleached denim and dyed canvas in shades of acid orange, yellows, purples and reds.
At the inaugural weekend of the event in August 2012, Hudson Artist and welder Kris Perry’s sculptural “MACHINES” occupied the industrial factory while flocked with a small army of noise and metal artists including Hunter Hunt-Hendrix’s Liturgy, experimental Orthrelm/Krallice guitarist Mick Barr, and Robin Carolan of Tri Angle Records. The following night was anchored by Gang Gang Dance, Prince Rama, Psychic Paramount, and a group show of visual artists including Spencer Sweeney, Tony Cox, William Stone, and Daniel Higgs.
Last year, Basilica opened its factory door to renowned visual artist Matthew Barney and his collaborator, composer Jonathan Bepler. For the event, Barney and Bepler orchestrated a one-time piece that found Julianna Barwick, Evian Christ, Pig Destroyer, and Pharmakon playing simultaneously to a score composed by Bepler with words arranged by Barney. The event also featured a performance by artist Genevieve Snow, readings by seminal punk legend Richard Hell and ex-Whitehouse noisemaker Peter Sotos, and musical sets from DIIV, Sky Ferreira, Cass McCombs, No Joy, Pure X, leading African Kora player Malang Djobeh, and Teengirl Fantasy.
That weekend turned out to be something special and very unlike the usual glutted music festival. As the NY Times said of BSS last year: “More festivals, in idyllic destinations or not, should explicitly be this way: a declaration and a creative act, in which a lot of different kinds of musical and literary sensibilities, low-key or oblique or confrontational, barely out of the egg or middle-aged and experienced, can be made memorable by juxtaposition and setting.”
Artist owned and operated since 2010, Basilica Hudson is a reclaimed 19th century factory converted into an art, performance, production and event space. Only two hours from New York City, and located just steps from the Hudson Amtrak station on the waterfront of the historic city of Hudson, New York. The 17,000 square feet of a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces constructed of industrial materials with a diverse floor plan, makes Basilica Hudson an ideal location for music, film and art festivals and events.
