“Aeroplane” by Doublewish ft. ARK IDENTITY

Double Wish, the project of Adam Sabolick and Philippe Andre, today share their new single and accompanying video, “Aeroplane” ft. ARK IDENTITY. The track is off their forthcoming EP, Deeper Ecstasy which is out via Hit the North Records on February 28th. The new music follows 2023’s Light Split Sparkle EP and 2024’s Universe Sometimes.

“Aeroplane” came together when Noah Mroueh (ARK IDENTITY) was visiting California for recording sessions with Andre. They’d been sharing ideas and bouncing off each other for years, but this session was different – Mroueh was looking to bring Double Wish into the fold for some collaborative writing, so on their final studio day, they sat down and began crafting the song.

The song itself is built on this strange, disjointed energy—two acoustic guitars locked in an almost tug-of-war, playing separate lines that don’t quite meet but exist alongside each other. They were tracked simultaneously with one microphone so there was no going back on the takes. There’s something about that contrast that felt right. Andre engineered the sound into a dry ’70s vibe. In a few post-production sessions, Double Wish pulled the song back into something sharper and more contemporary with the synth work. The synth parts are fleeting, always slipping in and out of the mix, hinting at something more shimmering beneath the surface.

“This year I dove deep into video game music, and I think you can hear that creeping in too,” explains Sabolick. “I’m not really immersed in gaming culture, but Philippe dabbles. I’d find these sound tracks (shout out Stardew Valley “Dance of the Moonlight Jellies”) and my mind would be blown and Philippe would already be onboard. There are definitely some Zelda vibes here too. We ended the track with this Mellotron lead that has this otherworldly, flute-like quality—it’s mystical, almost dreamlike, like you’re stumbling through a world that feels familiar but still out of reach.”

Mroueh of ARK IDENTITY goes on to explain “The aeroplane symbolizes being in transit—not fully here or there, just suspended between what you’ve left behind and what’s ahead. It’s that strange, in-between space where a lot of emotions surface—whether that’s leaving a place, a person, or even just old habits. It’s about taking that leap, even if you don’t have all the answers yet. There’s this duality of holding on to the past while also wanting to escape it. ‘Aeroplane’ is about learning to sit with those feelings instead of running from them.”

Deeper Ecstasy, the band’s third EP release in two years further accentuates the band’s prowess in their genre while Andre’s production skills help to push the sound into different realms, at times incorporating tinkering electronic sections (“25 Clovers”) and at others, leaning into some of their more tried and tested sounds; singed and spaced-out guitar tones (“Angel Falls”) and sun-blasted beach-funk (“Seatbelt (Deeper Ecstasy)”. Not one to be patient with exploring new sounds and musical direction, Sabolick and Andre quickly began working on Deeper Ecstasy following the release of Universe Sometimes and as much as their music tackles complex emotional themes, it’s also a vehicle for serial sonic experimentation.

“Angel Falls” is a song about diving headfirst into the unknown – taking the risk and allowing yourself to be swept away by the sheer force of what follows. It’s about confronting the feeling of falling, of surrendering to something beyond your control, and letting it shape you in ways you can’t predict.

“Angel Falls is a real place, the tallest waterfall in the world, but it feels almost like a myth, like a force of nature that exists outside of time. Sublime. Majestic. And utterly indifferent to your existence. When we make music, we often think of it not just as sound, but as a visual experience. So much of our work starts with something we see or imagine, and this one is no different. The place itself, with its massive drop and constant thunder, made me think of the emotional weight of tears. Maybe of nature itself weeping.”

A big influence for Sabolick and Andre this year was Laraaji’s “I Can Only Biss Out (F’Days)” and this comes to the surface on EP closer, “25 Clovers”. There’s a certain fluidity to Laraaji’s track; a sense of time stretching and warping that they aspired to bring into their sound. “The drums are kind of wild in “25 Clovers” – there’s this pulsating hi-hat groove that runs through most of the song, creating a sense of forward motion, like the beat is chasing itself. And then, at the end, everything starts to open up creating this delayed, almost fragmented rhythm. It’s like the song starts to unravel a little, but in a way that feels expansive rather than chaotic.”
