Julianna Barwick and Mary Lattimore will return on November 20th with their new project, an original motion picture score for Threshold, a film about 4x Olympic Medalist Jessie Diggins. Three tracks will be available for streaming on August 28th to coincide with the streaming premiere of Threshold on VOD services including Apple, Amazon Prime, and Youtube.  Threshold is the follow up to their previous LP  Tragic Magic, which came out last year.

Mary Lattimore explains, “Fresh off of recording our album Tragic Magic in 2025, we were asked to co-score this documentary about the brilliant cross-country ski champion Jessie Diggins. While Tragic Magic had constraints of instruments we were able to use, including historic, delicate and mysterious ones, along with those constraints, we had total sonic freedom. In the case of Threshold, the sky was the limit with instrumentation and we held an expansive palette, but our music existed within the framework of Jessie’s life and the vision of the directors. Holding both projects in our hands, two sides of the same coin, was challenging, mind-expanding and satisfying, in this year of making music as a duo. Jessie’s story has many triumphs, thrilling races and wins, but also quite low points that feel very human and call for musical tenderness. It was a pleasure to work with Julianna, Lars, and and Tor to find the right melodies to enhance this great doc about someone so admired.”

Threshold, composed by Julianna and Mary and recorded in Highland Park and Echo Park, Los Angeles will be co-released by Florid Recordings,
the imprint Julianna used dating back to earliest self-released CDs, and Blue Pool Recordings, a name Mary had been thinking about for a long time which she’ll use for her special projects. It will be available on LP, CD, and Digitally

“Six months into our year long edit, we realized we needed a score that could capture Jessie’s internal struggle while reflecting the isolation and euphoria of skiing in the Arctic Circle. A chance encounter with Mary and Julianna’s set at Knockdown Center in NYC revealed the very sounds we had been searching for.”

Threshold, directed and produced by Lars Brinkema & Torsten Brinkema, unfolds over the course of a single, high-stakes cross-country ski season, following Jessie Diggins as she pushes herself to compete at the highest level while battling a severe eating disorder that threatens to derail her career. Filmed in present-day vérité, from Arctic Circle races to the first World Cup on American snow in twenty-five years, Threshold asks what happens when a sport built on precision and control turns that same demand inward, and what it costs to compete while fighting for your own recovery. Through unprecedented access to Jessie and those closest to her, directing duo Lars and Torsten Brinkema craft a visceral, human account of vulnerability, stigma, and recovery. Illuminating the struggle between progress and pressure, the film is a testament to the importance of mental health in athletics.
