Afternoon Bike Ride have released a new video for “Miss Universe,” the track is lifted from their new album Running With Scissors, available via Friends of Friends. The video is a moving collaboration between Art Director Hayley Lim and ABR’s Lia Kurihara. Afternoon Bike Ride, includes Kurihara, Éloi Le Blanc-Ringuette and David Tanton

Hayley and Lia share many parallels in their lives, including having been their father’s caregivers who both sadly passed away this year. As Running with Scissors and the single “Miss Universe” explore loss, Hayley devised the concept of using the video to become their fathers for a day. “I wanted to show them meeting and doing classic dad activities like fishing, barbecuing, mowing the lawn, and falling asleep to WWII documentaries”,explains Hayley. “In this, we could live through them — wear their clothes and embody their mannerisms. Our dad characters blend with the real Lia and Hayley, which I think is a good metaphor for how our dads left a piece of themselves in us that still lives on.”

The video was filmed at a cabin in the Laurentians, just two days after Lia’s dad’s funeral. “Though I’m not an easy-crier, I can’t get through the video without tearing up at the first image of my dad’s big cheeky mustached-donned smile”, says Lia. “Grief is so non-linear and I think Hayley and I are the type to cope with work, throwing ourselves into creative projects and staying very busy so the paralyzing hole our dad’s have left behind doesn’t keep us from living the lives they were proud to have nurtured. Given how long our dads were sick, both Hayley and I have learned there’s no right or wrong way to grieve — this video is one piece of a larger puzzle in our journey of processing. ”

Running With Scissors doesn’t just explore grief in the abstract; it documents the daily ache of watching a loved one dissolve, while still grasping for the fleeting moments of recognition. At its core, Running with Scissors is about navigating the chaos of existence with open hands—sometimes catching, sometimes fumbling, but always feeling deeply. Across the twelve tracks, raw, emotional acoustic elements are fused with subtle electronic layers and indie rock grunge, creating a textured blend that feels as vast and intimate as the album’s themes.
