The death of It has been confirmed that Gary “Mani” Mounfield has sadly passed away at the age of 63. The news was announced by his brother, Greg Mounfield, on social media. Tributes are pouring in from his bandmates, including Ian Brown and other figures across the music world.

Mani was best known as the iconic, foundational bass player for The Stone Roses and later as a long-time member of Primal Scream. His distinctive, funky, and driving basslines were a defining element of the “Madchester” sound and his contribution to music is immense.

Tributes have poured in from fellow musicians and friends, including his Stone Roses bandmate Ian Brown, Liam Gallagher of Oasis, and Tim Burgess of The Charlatans.

His death comes almost two years after his wife, Imelda, passed away from cancer in November 2023. He is survived by his twin sons, Gene Clark and George Christopher, who are 12.

Gary “Mani” Mounfield’s musical legacy

The Stone Roses (1987-1996; 2011-2017): Mounfield joined the band in 1987, completing the classic lineup alongside Ian Brown, John Squire, and Alan “Reni” Wren.

Primal Scream (1996-2011): After The Stone Roses disbanded in 1996, Mani joined Scottish rock band Primal Scream, becoming a full-time member until he left for the Roses’ reunion. He played on albums including Vanishing Point (1997) and XTRMNTR (2000).

Other Projects: He was also part of the short-lived supergroup Freebass with Andy Rourke (The Smiths) and Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order).
