The Welsh intrumentalist Gwenifer Raymond is an eerie and avant-garde composer, and her next album, Last Night I Heard the Dog Star Bark, is no exception. Due for release September 5 via We Are Busy Bodies, the new record splices futurist and surrealist musical motifs with ancient folk horror concepts. ““I’ve always been a big sci-fi reader,” she says. “A bunch of the stuff I was reading had these themes about the nature of infinity, and tying this into concepts about the afterlife.

“Those thoughts were running in my mind a lot, especially when I was creating some of the droney sounds that book-end the album. The album enters from the cosmic void and exits through the galactic plane. Maybe you’re exiting out of hyperdrive into some strange planet where the album lives, then you zip out to find whatever is next.”

Her titular track is out today, and it’s a wobbly, folksy finger-picking guitar melody that’s as crispy as it is intricate. Drawing inspiration from her recent tours with Lankum, she began experimenting with texture and applying it to her own guitar playing. She also aims to channel some of her own Welsh heritage, looking to connect the earthniness of the woodland landscape and its mythological origins to the stars that shine above it.
