Empty Country, the project from Joseph D’Agostino (Cymbals Eat Guitars), is back today with new LP Live In NYC. The record is D’Agostino’s first live album was recorded on May 31st, 2025 at New York’s Brooklyn Monarch, and was engineered by Danielle DePalma and mixed/mastered by D’Agostino. It’s his first release since his 2023 LP Empty Country II.

“Empty Country recently opened a handful of US shows for the great Los Campesinos! Our brilliant front-of-house engineer Danielle DePalma managed to capture multitracks of the Brooklyn show, so I decided I’d go to town and mix/master it for official release to tide over the tens of rabid fans eagerly awaiting ECIII.

I rather like this three-guitar-attack configuration of Empty Country. Rachel (Browne, my lovely wife/frontperson of legendary rock band Field Mouse) and Ted (Bradley, of Strange Pains, an actual genius songwriter whose magnum opus double LP I am currently producing/ mixing) are playing and singing their asses off here. Predictably, Anne and Pat Dole deliver virtuoso performances. I, too, am present and perform satisfactorily. Adequately, even!

Empty Country released their self-titled debut in 2023 via Get Bet Records, D’Agostino’s storytelling lens shifted away from personal narrative and toward fiction; psychopaths, apparitions and deplorables populated a bleak and uncanny parallel version of American dystopia. Empty Country collaborated with Rachel and Zoë Browne (Field Mouse), Kyle Gillbride (Swearin’), Zena Kay (Angel Olsen), and former CEG drummer Charlotte Anne Dole.
