Zulu Pearls Share “Not Like The Others”

Zulu Pearls Share "Not Like The Others" Video and Stream

Berlin-based, by way of Washington, DC, Zulu Pearls continues a busy year with the release of “Not Like The Others,” the latest single from the upcoming Singles Deluxe, available on October 28thon Cantora. This time Zach Van Hoozer, AKA Zulu Pearls, is giving listeners a double-dose by dropping the single as well as the official video for the cut. Check them out below.

“Most videos I’ve done just go with the flow and any specific ideas get carved out in the process, but this one came to me at work, literally,” explains Van Hoozer. “My muse rolled up on a pair of roller skates and I knew that the job was already halfway done.  I was standing around at the Markthalle stand I work at and Lehua (Lii Ludlow) rolled up on her roller skates and a bomber jacket and I asked her straight off the bat if she’d be interested in being in our video. She said yes and a couple weeks later we were fortunate enough to attend a monthly Roller Disko followed by a visit to some deep East Berlin spots to contrast the Disko vibes with some of the bleak but beautiful scenery you can find around town.  I’m always interested in contrast and I think we got a bit of that- a fun summer-y clip with outsider undertones.  Lehua has been living here in Berlin for ages but is from California.  She’s one of a kind and was up for anything, which was great. The same goes for her dog as well, who muscled his way into making a strong cameo. Special thanks is in order to DP Henk Otte for being flexible and keeping things smoothed as we freewheeled around the city.”

In 2009, Zulu Pearls began the seemingly insurmountable task of being a guitar based band in the middle of Berlin, a city dominated by minimal beats and house piano. Five years on, with 2012’s No Heroes No Honeymoons LP under their belt, their resolve to stay the course has yielded some fine results in this fresh collection of singles.

Comprised of recording session B-sides too good to be discarded, the songs range from power pop anthems, soul-inflected reflections on lost love, full on R&B come-ons and faux philosophical grooves.  Tracks on Singles Deluxe were completed loosely over time on both sides of the Atlantic while compiling songs for Zulu Pearls’ second full length with sessions in the US overseen by producer Nick Anderson in Arlington, VA’s venerable Inner Ear/Bastille Studios and the rest by Van Hoozer himself, in various living rooms and practice spaces throughout Berlin.  Mixed down to tape at Berlin’s boutique, 100% analog Vox Ton Studios by Francesco Donadello (Efterklang-Piramida) and mastered by engineer Joe Laporta, the extra level of craft is immediately apparent in both the sound and the songwriting.

On top of the five original tracks on display, Singles Deluxe boasts exclusive remixes from a wide range of co-conspirators, artists and producers, including the likes of drifters Dirty Beaches (Montreal, CA) and Sapphire Slows (Tokyo, JP), weirdo-pop producer Young Marco (Amsterdam, NL) and Gothenburg, Sweden’s native son, Svart Express.

Alongside Van Hoozer, Zulu Pearls’ live line-up remains an ever changing constellation of international vagabonds, currently representing the Netherlands, Spain and England and of course the United States.Since the release of their debut LP, Zulu Pearls have visited NYC’s CMJ festival,  been to London for their first run of UK shows, played the main stage of Copenhagen’s Trailerpark Festival, toured Germany with Jacco Gardner and the Delta Riggs and as support, as well, opening for Mac Demarco, The Smith Westerns, Ducktails, The Big Pink, and The Twilight Singers to name a few.
