Shearwater have released their new single “You And Your Dog,” track is off their forthcoming album The New World, available July 31st via streaming services. It also holds the collection’s biggest surprise: after 90 seconds of piano and clarinet, a voice appears right next to you, almost inside your head. Most startling is that it’s not Shearwater singer Jonathan Meiburg: it’s art-pop pioneer Laurie Anderson, telling a story in her unmistakable voice that might have nothing, or everything, to do with the rest of the album.

“Laurie’s been a friend and hero of ours for a long time and when I wrote this story, it was easy to imagine in her voice,” Meiburg says. “I was thrilled when she agreed to perform it.” An eerie lyric video filmed by Meiburg in Chile feels like a clip from a lost Wim Wenders film, with Anderson’s voice leading the viewer on a journey through a dim, interior landscape of shifting memories and misplaced convictions.

The band of Meiburg, Emily Lee, and Dan Duszynski also announced a co-headlining European tour this fall with Loma. Beginning on October 31st with support from Any Kind, the 15-date When Can I See You? bill marks the first time ever that the sister groups have toured together, and their long-awaited return to playing live; it’s been a decade since Shearwater’s last full public performance (not counting their 2018 performances of Bowie’s “Berlin Trilogy” for WNYC in 2018), and eight years since the last Loma shows.

The New World includes guest appearances from Shahzad Ismaily, saxophonist and clarinetist Wieselman, qanunist Farouz Zriek, guitarist Leo Abrahams, ngonist Mamadou Kouyate, percussionists Mahamadou Tounkara and Moctar Kouyate (of Malian group Ngoni Ba), and drummer Thor Harris (Swans)
