Witch Post, the project of Alaska Reid and Dylan Fraser have dropped two acoustic reimaginings from Beast, their debut EP released earlier this year. The tracks, “The Wolf (Dusk)” and “Dreaming (Dusk).” The tracks follow their earlier singles “Chill Out” and “Rust.”

Witch Post is a Gemini-like meeting of minds that happened entirely by chance (or fate, if you prefer). In another stroke of coincidence, they discovered they are from towns which share the same name – one in Scotland, the other in Montana. Alaska Reid‘s music is drawn from the dark atmospherics of the American indie scene, and Dylan’s is pop but if it were warped by a house of mirrors. Their music pulls in equal parts from heaven and hell: their harmonic lightness wrestling with bloody, serrated guitars and infernal drums. The result sounds like a new incarnation of a sound and spirit pioneered by the likes of Pixies and Sonic Youth.

Upon the release of Beast, the band left a note: “‘Did you find him?’ Dylan asks Alaska as he hands her a candlestick of liver colored wax. Alaska doesn’t answer. Instead she pulls Dylan deeper into the snowy forest. Spring should be coming soon but the trees are skeletons and the cold air punches their lungs.

They enter a clearing of unspoiled snow and Alaska brings out the gargoyle. Her hands shake slightly. For a second Dylan glances beyond her shoulder, as if to make eye contact with her shadow. Then they kneel together and draw a circle in the snow. It’s so quiet that Alaska begins to imagine sounds, something breathing, a creature watching. A deer runs past, a dark blur weaving through the trees. Dylan positions the stone figure within the circle with a lit candle in front its eyes. Alaska picks up a silvery handful of snow and sprinkles it onto the gargoyle.
