Will Butler + Sister Squares — Miles Francis, Julie Shore, Jenny Shore, and Sara Dobbs, have shared a new single/video, “Arrow of Time,” the track is off their forthcoming self-titled album out September 22nd on Merge. “Arrow of Time,” follows their previously released single, “Long Grass.” “People really liked this when we played it; a few people at the merch table were like, ‘Which record is this song on?’” says Butler.
This fall, fans will have a chance to hear songs from Will Butler + Sister Squares fully realized for the first time. The tour kicks off at Elsewhere Zone One in the band’s hometown of Brooklyn, NY. A full list of dates is below and tickets are on sale now. Additionally, Butler will score the upcoming Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson crime thriller, Lips Like Sugar.

Inspired by A Brief History of Time, Errol Morris’ acclaimed documentary about Stephen Hawking, “Arrow of Time” offers an otherworldly groove so irresistible it nearly creates its own gravitational pull. “Hawking describes the concept, in paraphrase, as ‘you might see a teacup fall off a table and smash into bits, but you never see the bits come back together. Or if you did, you would instantly be aware that time is running backwards,’” Butler explains. “Lyrically, I feel like I was maybe trying to write a Pixies song about that idea — ‘Here comes your man,’ but instead of something coming, it’s just everything slowly dissolving into heat energy.”

After completing their August 2022, the band regrouped at Figure 8 Studios in Brooklyn. “Will and I organically discovered our relationship as a production duo through making this album. We didn’t have to talk too much about things as they happened, because the music just flowed,” says Francis. “As a producer, working with Jenny, Julie, and Sara is the dream. They connect so innately. In one motion they can conjure a mood, or get at the root of a feeling.” Will Butler + Sister Squares, broadly, is equal parts from Figure 8, group experiments from Will’s basement, and sessions in Miles’ Synthia Studio.
