Westerman premiered a new single “Take” from his upcoming album, An Inbuilt Fault, set to release on May 5th, 2023 via Partisan and Play It Again Sam. The accompanying music video for “Take” was directed by Edwin Burdis. The album’s opening track, “Give,” and “Take” are described by Westerman as contrasting reflections on a failed romance. Listen to the track here.

An Inbuilt Fault showcases Westerman’s experimental songwriting and features heavier and more daring music compared to his previous works. While working solo in isolation in Italy in 2020 and 2021, Westerman met Big Thief’s James Krivchenia at a London show, which led him to collaborate with the drummer and a group of associates in Los Angeles to flesh out his new songs. The Italy demos served as a foundation for improvisational jam sessions that elevated the songs to new emotional heights, sometimes dark and other times triumphant. Throughout the album, Westerman creates imaginary scenarios with multiple characters, each with their unique vocal effects or ranges, to express universal emotions.

The album artwork was designed by graphic designer and illustrator Bráulio Amado, who also worked with Westerman on his previous debut album. Westerman will embark on his first North American tour in four years, starting in May, with stops in Seattle, Chicago, New York, Washington, DC, Austin, and Los Angeles.
