Give A Damn

Vicky Farewell

Vicky Farewell returns with her second album, Give A Damn. To best describe this album, look at its artwork. The artwork depicts Vicky Farewell standing over an object on the beach. That is her; give a damn. In other words, this album’s brilliant yet striking bluntness yet at the same time subtlety come together to create a cohesive and calming gem.

Brilliant in the details. Give A Damn feels almost synonymous with this. The introduction “Intro (Remember Me)” sets the mood up, as most great introductions do, before setting into “Semi Auto.” This track begins similarly to the previous track, with a more calming tone, before effortlessly and flawlessly transitioning into something that feels a bit different this time, with the use of some more subtle styles and vocals. As the album progresses, it seamlessly incorporates a wide variety of different styles. This all works to accompany this feeling that the title suggests, and this work really hits you with. Give a damn. Even more than the subtle variety on display, Give A Damn reflects a strong sense of reflection and understanding. This work has a lot to say and presents it in an honest and deeply vulnerable manner.

Give A Damn is an amazing work that reflects an artist simply making a dynamic yet majestic experience on her album. And it works quite well. If there was a low point in the casual and unique flow presented here, it would be a slight lack of standoutness sometimes for the tracks, though in some ways, without it, it would inhibit the flow of some tracks in and of themselves. In a sense, Give A Damn benefits from that. The casualness. You can turn on Give A Damn without giving it much thought. However, if you pay close attention, you can fully immerse yourself in the experience and the work itself. Give A Damn has a powerful sense of vulnerability. This record’s unique and soothing aspects sometimes act as a voice for the vulnerability it expresses, exemplified by the calming, peaceful sounds that evoke a sense of reflection on the past. It is a bold, unique blend of genres that, once recognised, grips you into a distinct vocal and musical style that stands out significantly. Overall, Give A Damn is a work that is truly unique and soothing, featuring nice vocals, unique styles and production, all of which contribute to a subtle and robust body of work.
