Tkay Maidza has released the new single “Awake,” the Australian Hi-Hop artist’s track features a guest appearance from Baltimore rapper JPEGMAFIA. The single finds Tkay back to her blistering best, as she and JPEGMAFIA trade verses over Dan Farber’s (Lizzo) slamming trap beat and synth drones that sound like a nuclear attack alarm system signalling the end of the world.

The single’s frenetic, paranoia-drenched atmosphere has been matched by an equally claustrophobic video featuring Tkay and JPEGMAFIA flirting with spotlights through pitch-black city alley ways. They are like a couple of vampires in the night trying to avoid detection as much as they’re trying to launch a sneak attack as soon they score the opportunity. Directed by Keenan MacWilliam and Tkay herself, viewers are even given a glimpse at another unreleased song.

“The song is about insomnia,” explains Tkay. “I came up with the hook one night when I couldn’t sleep. It was in the middle of the night of a writing trip where I was up late ’til at least 3am every night for a whole month. We flipped the track and made it about what I do whilst I’m not sleeping. Then JPEG came and took it to another dimension.”

“Awake” is the first single Tkay’s released since her Last Year Was Weird Vol. 1 EP dropped in 2018. TKAY, has been nominated for an ARIA, and has pulled together a rolodex of collaborators that features some of the biggest names out there, including Run The Jewels’ Killer Mike and French producer extraordinaire Martin Solveig.
