The Phantom of the Highland Park Ebell

Current Joys, the project of Nick Rattigan, has teamed up with his visual collaborator Gary Canino to co-direct a horror-comedy-play-concert-film-experience: The Phantom of the Highland Park Ebell. The film follows the band as their rehearsals for an upcoming show are haunted by a disturbed spirit in the venue – chaos ensues soundtracked by live renditions of Voyager. The Phantom of the Highland Park Ebell makes its cinematic debut with two sold out screenings at Braindead’s Fairfax Studios cinema in Los Angeles tonight and tomorrow. The film is also coming out episodically on YouTube in the lead up to the soundtrack’s release on September 10th. “Act 1 – The Rehearsal” is available to stream now and precedes “Act 2 – Lights Out” and “Act 3 – Opening Night,” which will also be released ahead of the forthcoming North American headline tour including two one-off intimate dates next month at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, which is already sold out, and Market Hotel in Brooklyn.

Throughout The Phantom of the Highland Park Ebell, Current Joys has a brush with death when an ancient Evil that has been long buried in the theater is accidentally awakened. There is life, love, laughs and danger as the ensemble cast slash and solo their way toward their final performance, dodging chandeliers and “that damn phantom.”

A Nevada native, Rattigan began Current Joys in Reno, before moving to New York after school and busting his ass working as a production assistant in the film/TV industry. He relocated to Los Angeles in 2016, and the songs that make up Voyager began coming together shortly after. Rattigan believes in the premonitory power of music, and he latches onto the song ideas that strike him in the moment, propelled by an abstract existentialism or burst of feeling more than anything else.
