“The Flood” by Ye Vagabonds

Ye Vagabonds are sharing new single “The Flood,” from their forthcoming album, All Tied Together, available Jan 30, via Rough Trade’s River Lea label. “The Flood” is accompanied by a video directed by Ellius Grace (Lankum, Lisa O’Neill, Junior Brother).

“The Flood” was recorded completely live in a Galway house by Philip Weinrobe (Big Thief, Adrienne Lenker), it features an ensemble of players including Shahzad Ismaily and River Lea labelmate Sam Amidon.

Director Ellius Grace says of the video and song “When Brían and Diarmuid got in touch about making music videos for their new album I couldn’t say no. Their music is so evocative and beautiful, and this new album feels incredibly personal to them. It was an added bonus to hear that the guys had dancer Jimmy Southward on board, who I had seen on stage a number of times. This became a beautiful collaboration between all four of us, taking Brían and Diarmuid’s ideas and translating them into loose stories which Jimmy then brought to life through his performance. Brían and Diarmuid also wanted to shoot these videos in a single take to capture a feeling of immediacy or reality. This became a great challenge where myself and the crew had to choreograph ourselves along with Jimmy to land in the right places and have everything work the way it should.

The Flood is a song about the housing crisis, and how we live in urban spaces that can sometimes feel prohibitive and impossible to survive in. Jimmy takes on the character of a businessman with a supposedly successful job, though he’s still living in a tent in Phoenix Park. He gets up and goes to work, smiling and waving at passersby, but something moves him as he goes. His body convulses and he becomes more and more out of control. The briefcase is full of random objects and he throws that away eventually along with his phone, stripping away the veneer of a happy worker and becoming free. The more he succumbs to the movement and supposed madness, the happier he becomes. He doesn’t need to pretend any more.”

Ye Vagabonds will embark on a headline US tour on January 31 in Brooklyn, NY which sees them crossing the country for shows before finishing in Seattle, WA on February 16. Future touring plans include headline tours of the UK, Ireland, and Europe in 2026, including a show at London’s esteemed Roundhouse on June 11th.

The brotherly harmonies and multi-instrumental abilities of Diarmuid and Brían Mac Gloinn were joined on All Tied Together by multi-instrumentalists Shahzad Ismaily (Laura Viers, Cass McCombs) who flew over from Brooklyn, Alain Mc Fadden, Caimin Gilmore, Kate Ellis, Sam Amidon, Romain Bly and Louise Gaffney.

All Tied Together is the tenth album to be released by River Lea (run by Geoff Travis, Jeannette Lee and Tim Chipping) following records by Lisa O’Neill, Brìghde Chaimbeul, John Francis Flynn, a compilation of Irish music from the archives compiled by Lankum’s Ian Lynch, Sam Amidon, Poor Creature and Ye Vagabond’s previous albums ‘The Hare’s Lament’ and ‘Nine Waves’.
