The Ettes are back with new single, “On the Run,” a “lost” song written by Byrds co-founder and solo artist Gene Clark. The track is off their new EP, Passionate Liars, out today. The group is led by guitarist/vocalist Coco Hames and drummer Maria “Poni” Silver, are releasing “On the Run” around the 35th anniversary of Clark’s passing. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer – who died tragically young in May 1991 at the age of 46.

“Gene Clark’s music is a guiding light,” said Hames. “There’s something so ethereal about the way he approaches his melodies and song structures – but the feeling and lyrics are always grounded in this total emotional reality. It’s an utterly unique combination.”  “On the Run” is one Clark’s greatest, if largely unknown, compositions. Co-written with his frequent collaborator Pat Robinson in the 1980s, Hames first heard a lo-fi live bootleg version of Clark performing the tune when she was a teenager.

Hames finally decided to cut “On the Run” as part of the reunited Ettes’ first studio session in 15 years last summer. The stark black and white video for the song finds Hames and Silver at play in the fields of Tucson, Arizona’s K Bar Shea Ranch — where Hames serves as a certified therapeutic riding instructor helping children with special needs.

spring 2026, saw The Ettes release their first new music in over a decade, with “Dangerous Girl,” which served as a call to arms for the group’s longtime fans. In April, The Ettes followed-up with their first proper single since 2011, wit “Not At All.” 

The Ettes include Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather on bass – spent August 2025 at Joshua Tree, California’s iconic Rancho de la Luna recording studio cutting tracks with producer/guitarist Dave Catching (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal). Catching’s evocative lap slide and widescreen production colors “On the Run,” partnering perfectly with Hames’ aching lead vocal and the plaintive percussion of Silver. 

In addition to the Ettes recent trio of singles, the Passionate Liars EP is rounded out by a further pair of Hames’ originals: the slow-burning kiss-off “Just So” and the gorgeously somber remembrance “One More.” The EP serves as a preview of a forthcoming full-length album from The Ettes, which is set for release later this fall.
