Coma Girl, recently shared their new single “The Broken Bong Song,” with a fun and spontaneous music video for the track. The project of Portland, OR based musician Quin Saunders, Coma Girl began in Los Angeles as an outlet to escape the lost and lonely feeling of being adrift in the sprawling metropolis. After a move back north in 2020 Saunders began releasing her first music as Coma Girl, inspired by bands like Blink 182, Jeff Rosenstock and Against Me!. “The Broken Bong Song” is emblematic of the fresh start that Coma Girl represents for Saunders, and the sense of empowerment that she gets through writing and releasing music. “The song is about a breakup,” she explains, “but this is a song for anyone who’s kept you down.”

“The Broken Bong Song” was written in Los Angeles, explains Saunders, “but the instruments were tracked in the attic of my parents house outside Portland, and the vocals were recorded in my shitty studio apartment in an industrial area of downtown.” For the most part this mirrors the production of the songs to be released on a forthcoming EP. The result are tracks that sound as raw and real and alive as the lyrics they underpin.

Music has always been integral to Saunders identity. Early on while growing up in punk scenes and going to shows as a fan, then later playing in other people’s bands in high school. Now she finds herself taking control of her own narrative, writing and releasing her own songs with a message to share from her own perspective. “I feel that trajectory parallels my own experience with gender pretty well too” she explains. “Getting into songwriting and finding my voice has really changed my life. I see the world through a new filter I didn’t have access to in the past.” Through Coma Girl Saunders hopes to tell her story and inspire others. “Part of what I’m trying to do is prove that trans people matter and deserve to be just as represented as cis people are in the entertainment industry,” she says, “because it’s not even close, and we need that representation, growing up I saw none.”
