What do you get when you mix cries louder than Chuck Schuldiner, a collective as mysterious as Sault, and an angst that refuses to fade out? The result is The Armed: apocalyptic, noisy, and relentless, actively blurring the lines between hope and pessimistic defiance.

Detroit’s The Armed are back with THE FUTURE IS HERE AND EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE DESTROYED, two years after 2023’s Perfect Saviors. Led by creative director Tony Wolski, the band proclaims that “The Armed are the world’s greatest band”, and for good measure: the cult-like mystery regarding who is part of the band adds intrigue to post-hardcore, a genre already challenging on its own. The Armed demands patience: their music insists you surrender to volume, offering catharsis without a clear resolution in a timeline where the world collapses under its weight.

Five seconds into the opening track, Well Made Play, the guitars dissolve beneath the violent screams. It’s an anthem of confrontation, begging you to repent and choose authenticity in a Kafkaesque society where paradise is unjustly reached by delusion and judgment is constantly postponed. The Armed are back, louder than ever, and they are not holding back. The world is disastrous, and humans have no regret over the destruction they cause. Each tune – if you could call them tunes- erupts into solid walls of noise at points, simply serving as backdrops to amplify the sheer force of the screams.

Each contributor serves to ensure that the songs retain a thread of melody even as they crumble with noise. Noise-rock artist Prostitute is the album’s sole clearly credited feature on the track Broken Mirror, a song as ruthless as its title makes it out to be. Just when you think it can’t get more punishing, The Armed hit you even harder. I Steal What I Want and Kingbreaker are other highlights, where the noise takes center stage but never loses harmony and rhythm.

The creative vision and craftsmanship of Wolski shine on Heather, a track veiled between the explosive Gave Up and the closer A More Perfect Design. Sounding almost indie, the track offers a rare moment of restraint. Nevertheless, the fresh breath of air only lasts for about five minutes before Wolski redirects the anguish on A More Perfect Design. He cries out, “Don’t let it make you go numb / Don’t let it dull your compassion / Don’t let them tell you you’re wrong / Don’t let them claim this is balance.” Seemingly fixated on the arrival of the apocalypse, Wolski renounces passive acceptance. The Armed are not just frustrated; they want you to be angry with them.

The Armed will not be patient with you, nor will they accept what’s dictated to them. On THE FUTURE IS HERE AND EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE DESTROYED, the collective fulfills their prophecy, juggling the intensity they have become known for with ease, all while fusing the shards of noisy dissonance and melody with fury. It’s not simply a rebellion, it’s a ritual.
