Will Epstein, has shared his new single “That’ll Be Me,” his first new solo music since 2023’s Wendy (deemed his “sharpest solo work” by Pitchfork). “‘That’ll Be Me’ is a wide-eyed, open-hearted death song set to a lilting groove and a melodic cadence that brings to mind the light touch of Tin Pan Alley. I wrote it during a tumultuous couple of weeks in January of this year in which my grandmother passed away, and multiple friends lost their homes in the LA/Altadena fires,” he explains. “Pulling the words out of mouth at the end of the refrain, ‘Losing it all/That’ll be me,’ was the most frightening and satisfying experience I’ve ever had as a songwriter. I’d spent so much energy in my life pushing away that thought that it felt, well, if not good exactly, at least refreshing to admit the truth to myself. Even as loss hung heavy in the air during those weeks, I had no desire to make something overly maudlin and there’s a subtle sense of borscht-belt-like humor that underlies the heavy themes.”

Epstein, has also released 2022’s Whims–releases under the moniker High Water (2016’s Crush and 2013’s The Beautiful Moon EP), and collaborations with Nicolás Jaar and Dave Harrington (Darkside), Epstein is known for his scores for film (Nam June Paik: Moon Is The Oldest TV, nominated for an IDA Documentary Award), TV (HBO’s Baby God), and podcasts (Know Your Enemy). He has also composed work for dance and art installations with institutions like the Martha Graham Dance Company, English National Ballet, and Metropolitan Museum of Art.
