To celebrate the release of their new album Immaterial, which is out today via Nomad Eel, Los Angeles band supergloom share the project’s latest cut, “Glass Ajar.” The track also premieres alongside a lyric video crafted by the band. To celebrate the arrival of their brand new EP, supergloom is hosting an EP Release Show at The Echo in Los Angeles, CA on August 27.

supergloom’s forthcoming EP, Immaterial, songs are inspired by existentialism and philosophy. Trying to find one’s place within the confines of society with much self-reflection leads to a sequence of epiphanies with the realization that nothing is real other than the collective consciousness that binds us all together. The new track “Glass Ajar” and prior single “Cycles” comment on the light and dark sides of codependence.

The words “Glass Ajar” came to supergloom’s drummer, Shane Graham, in a waking dream about a mind cracked open and left to unfurl into a maddening, disorganized stream of consciousness. As a collaboration between its five members, the song evolved into a tone poem revolving around the idea of losing yourself when in a relationship; by pouring your mind and setting your soul into and beside another and hanging onto their every word. Both lyrically and sonically, the song is meant to evoke those same thoughts and feelings of entrancement, obsession, and romantic despair.

Each song on the EP was demoed with parts being passed back and forth and then brought into the rehearsal room to flesh out. MBV, Queens of the Stone Age, Smashing Pumpkins, and Nine Inch Nails were a few bands that inspired the songwriting of the EP. The songs were then tracked live, focusing on the drums and bass and then overdubbing guitars, keys, and vocals. The EP was produced by Smashing Pumpkins’ Jeff Schroeder and Jules de Gasperis, engineered & mixed by Jules de Gasperis, and mastered by Will Borza and Joe Lambert.

“This was our first time working with producers, (Jeff Schroeder & Jules de Gasperis) which was a great experience. Jeff was a great help with instrument choices, sounds, arrangement and creating space within the songs. Jules was very helpful with achieving any sounds we were imagining in our minds, as well as encouraging us to record/ incorporate different tones to create contrast in the songs. You become aware of trimming things down, simplifying and focusing on the essence of the songs. It’s often easy to muddy things up by having too much going on at once. Overall we wanted the EP to be more refined and focused than our previous work.”
