Superchunk will release Misfits & Mistakes: Singles, B-sides & Strays 2007–2023, their fourth singles collection, on October 27. Today they are excited to share one of the 50-song collection’s many hard-to-find gems, their cover of The Cure’s “In Between Days” from The A.V. Club’s gone-but-not-forgotten Undercover series. Recorded a few short months after the announcement of Majesty Shredding, this cover had been banished to all but the darkest corners of the internet—until now!

Here’s what Mac McCaughan has to say about “In Between Days”:

“The A.V. Club was doing a series where bands picked a song to cover from a list, and we stopped by their “studios” to record this when we were in Chicago for a show. Without taking a poll of our band, I’m going to say The Cure is one of the few groups that we all agree upon. I was a fan in high school and love the early records, but when The Head on the Door came out, it was one of those “how can an album be this good!?” moments, and of course, this song is a classic. I wish I could sing like Robert Smith, but don’t we all…”

In the tradition of Superchunk singles compilations, Misfits & Mistakes houses non-album tracks, demos, and cover songs sourced from 7-inches, compilations, and previously internet-exclusive artifacts. Featuring extensive liner notes by McCaughan (with additional notes from Laura Ballance), the collection tells the story of each release, from why they chose to cover songs by The Misfits, The Cure, Destiny’s Child, and Bananarama, to working with collaborators like Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee), Jane Wiedlin (The Go-Go’s), Eleanor Friedberger, Damian Abraham (Fucked Up), Norman Blake and Raymond McGinley (Teenage Fanclub), and more!
