Sunsetter announces their new album The Best I Can Be. The project of Andrew McLeod drops March 31

Sunnsetter, is the project of multi-artist Andrew McLeod, today they have announced their new album The best that i can be will arrive on March 31, 2023 via Paper Bag Records. The title intentionally reads as a sentence – maybe even more of a mission statement. Mostly, it is an acknowledgement of the process making the record, allowing Andrew to ultimately arrive at the personal place and feel as the album title suggests.

“These songs are something I have been working towards for the better part of three years,” said McLeod. “During this time, I have grieved the loss of a close friend/bandmate and continuously dealt with my journey of sobriety and struggles with mental well being, concepts around gender identity and queerness; while simultaneously, of course, being thrown into even more chaos via the pandemic. I hope that these songs can make sense to the people who have never heard my music and the people who have supported me along the way. This is simply the best that I can be, through song, and the need to share that feeling with the world is what has kept me going this entire time.”

Andrew previews another single + video from the album, with “Always talk, Never speak” today. “I think it’s extremely important to speak your truest self openly, and to actually mean it. So many people never really say what they truly mean, or what they feel for fear of ridicule. I’ve lived with the struggle of presenting my truest self to the world for a long time, and no longer want to live that way.”

“This is simply the best that I can be, through song, and the need to share that feeling with the world is extremely overwhelming,” says McLeod. The best that i can be. follows The love you withhold is the pain you carry (2020) and All watched over by machines of loving grace (2022).

Outside of Sunnsetter, McLeod is a contributor to twice Polaris nominated and shortlisted ZOON, headed by Daniel Monkman, and Ombiigizi, a collaboration between Monkman and Adam Sturgeon of Status/Non-Status. Andrew sings on Zoon’s just released new single “A Language Disappears” and performed and wrote on the new record as well. As a multi-disciplinary artist, single-handedly mastering all elements of their music-making (and additionally handles their own photography, visuals, creative and more) Andrew works primarily from an idyllic home studio in rural Norfolk County.

McLeod reflects on this musical and personal journey to date, their lost friend always top of mind. “I needed to recognize for myself that I can find a way to live beyond that grief and self-inflicted guilt. Find ways to hold myself accountable, change what I could for the better of myself and the people I love. This is what they would have encouraged me to do.”
