Bob Mould’s band Sugar hasn’t played together in decades, so when they finally reunited this past May for three sold-out nights at New York’s Webster Hall, someone had the good sense to bring cameras. That footage became Changes: The Story of Sugar, a 20-minute documentary premiering on YouTube at noon ET on Thursday, August 6, with Mould sticking around afterward for a live online afterparty with fans.

Director Rob Hatch-Miller, who’s made a habit of digging into music history with films on Other Music and Syl Johnson, had a lot of material to work with. Alongside the new interviews with Mould, bassist David Barbe, and drummer Malcolm Travis, he tracked down some genuinely rare stuff: Lance Bangs’ unseen footage of Sugar’s very first show at Athens’ 40 Watt Club, clips from Mould’s 1991 European tour with Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., and Nirvana, and old appearances on MTV’s 120 Minutes from back when the band was a mainstay there.

Hatch-Miller calls it one of the happiest stretches of Mould’s career, and Mould himself seems to agree — he’s said in the film that people tend to know him for Hüsker Dü and his solo work, without realizing how much fun Sugar actually was.

The timing isn’t a coincidence. Sugar is heading into the U.S. leg of its Love You Even Still tour right after the documentary drops, kicking off August 11 in Denver and running through late October, with sold-out stops already locked in at Minneapolis’s First Avenue and Philadelphia’s Union Transfer. A cut of every ticket sold goes to The Trevor Project. And if you’re catching a show, keep an eye out for the limited colored-vinyl 7″ of “House of Dead Memories” and “Long Live Love” — the band’s first new songs in over 30 years — sold exclusively on the road.
