Today’s song was inspired by the “The Mothman” event in 1960’s West Virginia, during which many residents of the small town reported sightings of a large, winged creature just before a bridge catastrophically collapsed, claiming 46 lives. Longo explains, “Told from the perspective of a man who has lost his brother, and his main lifeline to the world, the song is less about the creature and more about the value, or lack of value, of brushes with the paranormal if, in the end, we still have to reckon with loss alone.” Longo approaches tragedy with placating melodicism, his voice as pure and holy as a bell. The effect is uncanny—lyrics like a nightmare delivered through a lullaby. “I need something supernatural to wrestle with, just to understand my own earthly troubles,” he says. “I write to access a feeling and get past it.” Longo may summon the ghosts to dispel them, but Thin Lear’s music remains vibrantly haunted, full of eerie figures loping along, human or otherwise, hoping to heal.

Thin Lear released his debut album Wooden Cave in 2020, followed by the vibrant EPs, A Beach of Nightly Glory and A Shadow Waltzed Itself, in 2024 and 2025 . His most recent releases include a moody rendition of Nick Lowe’s “The Beast In Me” as well as original track “My Old Friend” produced by Sam Cohen (Kevin Morby, Rhett Miller, Madi Diaz). MAGNET Magazine praised the latter as “an intriguing intersection of glam rock and indie folk, his Anglophilic vocals sounding remarkably Marc Bolan-esque amid the track’s baroque-pop trappings.” Thin Lear has collaborated with Matthew E. White (Natalie Prass, Hiss Golden Messenger, The Mountain Goats) and played shows with Jesse Malin, Greg Mendez, Charlie Parr, and The Shivers, and more.
