“Rollin and Tumblin” by Valerie June

Valerie June has shared “Rollin’ and Tumblin,’” the track is the follow-up to previous single “Runnin’ and Searchin,’” and off the artist’s LP Owls, Omens, and Oracles,, now out via Concord. Following a run of shows in Tokyo, Ireland, and the southwestern United States, this fall and winter, June continues on her Big Ole Worldwide Tour.

Reflecting on “Rollin’ and Tumblin’,” June says: “Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne’s dark, heavy metal sound was heavily influenced by the blues. As a multi-genre artist, I wanted to take this old standard and perform it with my banjo running through a super fuzzy electric guitar amp. Working with Matt Marinelli (producer, bass) and Andy Macleod (drums), we turned this song upside down and inside out. The heavy metal banjo breaks the chains that confine it to traditional forms by meeting rock and roll. The result is a fierce and wild reconstruction that is Ozzy-influenced and dedicated to his memory.”

Fans of June, include Bob Dylan and written music for Mavis Staples. She is the subject of an exhibit at the National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) in Nashville featuring artifacts from her storied career. She has shared the stage with Willie Nelson, Dinosaur Jr., John Prine, Tyler Childers, Brandi Carlile, Elvis Costello, Robert Plant, Meshell Ndegeocello, and well beyond.
