Greece’s Mechanimal (Giannis Papaioanou, Freddie Faulkenberry) have returned with the new song “Easy Dead,” the A-side of their new EP, White Flag was released on June 21st via Inner Ear. Along with the single, the Athenian band are sharing a new clip for the EP’s B-side “Red Mirror”.
Mechanimal’s Giannis P on the video for “Red Mirror”:
“The video for “Red Mirror” was shot and directed by John Karabelas. We all admire the way images and video can be bitcrushed and pixelated and kinetic, so they turn more to some abstract painting than encoding errors. We love this kind of glitched-out aestheticism that actually has roots in net art movement of the early aughts. It’s all about hacking, cloning and copying our own stuff, when questions about rights and authenticity really become issues.”
Mechanimal’s Freddie F. on the video for “Red Mirror”
“Red Mirror is a hymn to reconstruction, rebirth, and all that comes hand in hand with that, destruction, erasing and rebuilding. It’s about decline, but not necessarily with a negative outcome.”
Mechanimal is an industrial audio-visual unit hailing from Athens, Greece, founded in 2011 by songwriter and music producer Giannis Papaioannou, who is the sole responsible for the direction of the band. Mechanimal’s musical language draws influences from a wide range of genres, and features male (and female) vocals against a backdrop of mechanical repetitive beats, shoegaze guitar drones and pulsating synth sequencers. Their eponymous debut was released in 2012 by Inner Ear featuring Freddie Faulkenberry on vocals and Tassos Nikogiannis on guitars. On stage, Mechanimal employed video elements created by Angelica Vrettou. Secret Science, their second album, was released in 2014 by Inner Ear. The line up for their third album, symbolically titled by the acronym “Delta Pi Delta”, consisted of Eleni Tzavara on vocals along with both past guitarists and released by Inner Ear in January 2016.
