Qrion shares her first taster of new music since the release of her 2021 debut album, with her single ‘Miyanosawa’ – a multi-layered, emotional builder filled with twinkling chords and a rippling beat, portraying a story swathed in memories, nostalgia and inspiration. Named after a small town in Sapporo, Japan, where she is from, ‘Miyanosawa’ was the final stop in a daily journey for Qrion (real name Momiji Tsukada) to get to high school.

Speaking about the release, Qrion says “Miyanosawa is a song about memories and nostalgia, about moments of realisation and inspiration, and ultimately about seeing the light and saying goodbye to your past. It’s been ten years since I made that daily journey, during which time I’ve experienced a lot of ups and downs. I finally feel like I’m able to say goodbye to my past.”

Growing up in snowy Sapporo, Momiki Tsukada’s father was a pianist, and taught her how to play from the very beginning of her life. The freeform jazz he’d play, experimenting with chords and melodies, stayed with her. When she was in secondary school, the 2011 EDM era was in full swing. The music from artists such as Skrillex, Knife Party, and Porter Robinson reminded her of the energy of the Japanese rock, post-hardcore and punk that she loved. Inspired by this, 16-year-old Tsukada started working on her own music whenever she could.

Fast forward to today, with a new direction for her sound, Qrion is concentrating on moments of joy through her music. “It’s really therapeutic for me, playing shows and being vulnerable together with the audience”, she says. “I really enjoy how we can connect through music.”

Melancholic, wistful, and dancefloor-minded, Qrion’s sound ranges from supple, exploratory works to driving house and soul-sampling groovers, always with a light and playful touch – evoking memories and feelings through sound.
